GENERAL

NAME: Anuhea Alapai
NICKNAMES: Anu is tolerable, as is An. If you call her Annie, you'd better be damn close.
AGE/DOB: 18, March 19th
BLOOD STATUS: Half-blood; both her parents are wizards but there's a solid smattering of no-maj relatives in and around the family tree.
GENDER/PRONOUNS: Female, she/her
SEXUALITY: Heteroflexible
HOMETOWN: Wahiawa, Hawaii

CONCEPT: Little fish, unwilling to compromise her sense of self, accidentally swims upstream

PHYSICAL

APPEARANCE: Big on the dramatic eye make up that makes her look 10 years older than she is. Less big on colorful clothes: black is her color. There are definitely some lite goth vibes going on, here. It's cool, it suits that ghost hunting aesthetic.

HEIGHT: 5' 8"

PB: Tristin Mays

PERSONALITY

LIKES: her camera, quidditch, honesty, the color black, exploring weird dark dirty places, gettin' that hot scoop, ghosts, shaved ice, chicago style hot dogs, garbage street food in general, the stenographer's notebook her mom bought her as a 16th birthday present (as of yet unused, but carried everywhere, just in case), acerbic/sarcastic humor, people who don't take themselves too seriously, people who know that the shortest distance between two points is a line

DISLIKES: her natural hair color (a medium brown, she dyes it dark), zombie movies, babies, coffee without cream and sugar, fiddle faddle, miscommunication, scented candles (they all smell like poop wax, guys, so can we please just use the plain ones in our seance?), small towns, pastel colors, when people assume she's super friendly just because she's from hawaii, honestly? hawaiian tourists in general

PERSONALITY:

Anuhea doesn't enjoy conflict. That should be made clear up front, since there are probably people out there who have mistaken her forthright and stubborn personality for confrontation. She is incredibly upfront about who she is and what she wants, though, and that's not something she's willing to compromise on. Honesty is always the best policy with Anuhea, and frankly, she thinks the world would be vastly improved if everyone else were the same way. No need to beat around the bush, no room for misunderstanding: just say what you want and, assuming all parties are acting in good faith, any problem can be solved.

That said, sometimes Anuhea needs the reminder that "What? I was just being honest." is no excuse for being a bit of a jerk. She has a sarcastic/biting sense of humor, which, when coupled with her pragmatic approach to life, can come across as a bit misanthropic. It's something she's trying to reign in a bit, as she's not actually mean and doesn't wish to be seen as such. And to her credit, she is quite self-aware — the thing about honesty is that it comes with self-reflection. Being true to yourself also means recognising your flaws. Thick-skinned, self-deprecating Anuhea is happy to crack a joke at her own expensive. She has never held a grudge in her life.

While you certainly couldn't call her hotheaded, Anuhea isn't exactly relaxed or go-with-the-flow either. Firmly grounded (and even a little steely), she tends to pursue her goals with a singleminded focus. Right now, that's investigative journalism. In fact, she aspires to become a reporter like her mother. Anuhea prefers the detective bit to the writing (photojournalism is more up her alley, and she brings her camera pretty much everywhere), but like... there are limited openings in the "private eye" sector, so she's keeping doors open, for now.

What kind of investigation, you ask? WELL. Any good Scooby Doo mystery is alright by her. If someone were murdered, she'd be snapping pics of that, too, but sadly, no one has ever died at Gooseberry High, so she's stuck investigating the mysterious case of the dipshit freshmen. ... oh yeah, and there's a fuckin paranormal monster thing in the forest. Spooky time ghost shit? You can sign her the fuck up. Yeah, that's right. Anuhea Alapai is a Certified Ghost Hunter™.

Look, there isn't a lot else to report on around here. And yeah, she's knows it's stupid and probably sort of dangerous, but Anuhea's got a camera, a curious mind, and a loyalty to #1 Paranormal Fanboy Neil Rosenkrans, so fuck it, she's in this for the long haul.

HISTORY

FAMILY MEMBERS:

Josephine Alapai; mom, journalist, transplant from the mainland who sometimes feels out of place on the island, compensates by being aggressively community/family oriented, an Embarrassing Mom Who Loves Her Children Very Very Much
Akamu Alapai; dad, MACUSA rep, very go-with-the-flow, maybe too go-with-the-flow?, frankly is not sure how he got here
Kale Alapai; brother, 14, hates health food and regrets being born (it means Charles in Hawaiian, guys)

HISTORY:
  • Mama Josephine is an investigative reporter and a local powerhouse who wields a fair amount of influence in the Hawaiian wizarding community. it's her work that has lead to the Alapai's becoming a semi-prominent family, although they are neither particularly rich nor powerful, and they certainly aren't legacy types.
  • Her dad, Akamu ran for MACUSA rep at Josephine's suggestion and, essentially, on the back of her reputation. Previously, he had managed a small business. The win came as a surprise to him — but then again, most things surprise him, so what else is new? He's a pretty good representative despite being somewhat ineffectual, and he's well-liked in his community.
  • Kale and Anuhea had a pretty unremarkable upbringing. Treehouse in the backyard. Fruit stands in the summer. Team pictures from their Little League Quidditch matches on the walls. They squabbled every now and then, the way siblings tend to do, but generally, they got along well.
  • Kale and Anu attended the local charter school for grades K-8 and were doing well enough. Anuhea, though, never felt like she was really thriving... she was fairly strong student, but she was bored as hell and everything was starting to get tiresome. In danger of becoming Daria-esque, disaffected youth, she petitioned her her parents to let her apply to schools off the island, hoping to broaden her horizons and maybe even spark a little adventure.
  • Her application to Gooseberry included a few tentative pictures — her interest in photojournalism was just starting to solidify — and honestly, despite being elementary and sort of clumsy, they showed a lot of potential. Probably they were no small part of her acceptance. Being a good student from a political family certainly didn't hurt, either.
  • Anuhea's primary interests at Gooseberry are Quidditch and Asher Guthrie's paper, the Goosey Globe, and she invests a lot of time into both — as a Chaser for the former and as a photographer and occasional staff writer for the latter.
  • Gooseberry was also where she fell headfirst into the Ghost Hunter Squad. At first, it was just something that kept her entertained and let her use her camera — she never really believed in no-maj ghosts... at least, not until she met Neil, who'd come face to face with one. Now, she Believes in spookyass bullshit, which makes their investigations both a lot more interesting and also a lot scarier. Frankly, there are times when she thinks she's be better off getting out of the game before she and her friends get turned to demon-chum... but then Neil asks her to stick around, Anuhea, and go in first, Anuhea, and sure, one of us will stay overnight in the creepy abandoned building, won't you Anuhea?
  • Goddamn it.
  • Okay, so there are limits to her self-reflection. If she actually stopped for one second, she'd be forced to acknowledge that she has a fatty ghoul crush on one Neil Rosenkranz and probably, everyone knows it. Because the only time she's quiet/compliant/soft spoken is when he tells her to do something fuckin' dumb and she's like "........ okay." UGH.
  • Speaking of her terrible taste in men, all the Ribbonfin girls in her cabin were fairly close knit until Anuhea's junior year. Tabitha was her long-time roommate and Diego was self-destructive; she knew both those things going in. Anu's life philosophy of "everyone should just say what they want" has it's limits; she shouldn't have shrugged her shoulders and said, "Well, he says he's cool with this." It'd have been one thing if she'd been ignorant to Diego's particular brand of self-sabotage, but she wasn't. "You sure you're DTF?" wasn't exactly a thorough investigation, and she was a shitty friend (and a shitty detective) for taking everything at surface value.
  • So. They had sex. Her and Diego. It happened, they mutually goofed, and she wasn't going to pretend otherwise. Anuhea very much owns up to her role in making the senior Ribbonfin girls' cabin a cold war zone, but she really wishes they could all move on. If the other girls don't want to, that's fine and she can't force them, but... it's been a while. She'd like to put it behind her, if Tabitha is ready too.

SCHOOL

YEAR: Senior (Grade 12)

HOUSE: Ribblefibble

SORTING: Anu would have done well in Coppertale or Ebonhide, but Ribbonfin was where she chose to go. It's not a bad fit — she's open, accepting, forgiving, definitely not a hothead... but diplomacy certainly isn't her strong suit and a pushover she is not. There are probably a few people in the school who raised an eyebrow at her sorting. Those who are close to self-reflective, honest Anuhea, however, know that she has never shied away from her faults. In Ribbonfin, the trout told her, she would be surrounded by personable, calm, friendly folks — a helpful counterbalance and a learning opportunity ‐ and that appealed to her. She had enough bear and fox in her already; a few more fishies in her life would do her good.

WAND: Banyan wood and honeycreeper feather, 11", springy

FAMILIAR: Honestly, Anuhea doesn't love animals. She sometimes thinks about adopting a bird (a hawk, maybe — one that would fly beside her when she was on her broom) but that sounds like a lot of work, so she's familiar-less, for now.

CLASSES: Herbology, hermeticism, outdoor education, potions, transfiguration, artificing, defence against the dark arts

SENIOR PROJECT: Photojournalism project documenting the wild, magical creatures of Gooseberry. Goosey is the star, but Anuhea is hoping a pic of the Entity In The Forest will complete her collection.

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: Solid student, but not at the top of her class or anything. She doesn't love sitting in a classroom all day; she's more of a kinaesthetic learner.

EXTRACURRICULARS: Gardening, Quidditch (Chaser), regular contributor to the Goosey Globe (RIN APPROVED).

With respect to Qudditch: Anuhea has been playing since her sophomore year, and is very interested/invested in the sport. She is, frankly, a little mad about getting passed up for captain — Avery is a junior and that chafes. She firmly believes that old age and treachery will always defeat youth and skill, and has been known to challenge Avery (JORDAN APPROVED) on occasion. She is a Ribbonfin and, ultimately, a team player, so she'll usually sublimate that urge for the sake of the team. Mostly. She does spends a lot of time (affectionately) rolling her eyes @her team alongside the other members of the Breakfast Club (Faye, Dahlia, Dru).
